Зайдите в X под пользователем (с локалью ru_RU.UTF8, как по умолчанию), создайте файл с русским текстом в UTF8, скажем, russ-utf8.txt, затем:

xmessage -file russ-utf8.txt

Результат: Вместо кириллицы всякие последовательности "\....".

Ожидаемый результат: Кириллицу видно.

(Или проще проверяется: 

xmessage Привет

.)

Возможно, gxmessage был бы workaround-ом, но оно в Lite 4.0.3 не входит.

Боюсь, это не лечится.  Нужно включать gxmessage & co.
